Have a bit of an issue on my plate. My clients LMS only supports SCORM packages of 500MB. We have a course that is 720MB. We reduced the size of the images, videos, documents and got our zip file down to 580MB.
What else can we do get this size down, would appreciate and suggestions?
If your SCORM package ends up larger than your LMS allows, there are a few simple ways to trim it down without losing quality. Below are some practical steps you can take to reduce your course size and keep it under the 500MB limit.
Tips to Reduce SCORM Package Size in Compozer
If your exported SCORM package exceeds your LMS’s file size limit, here’s how to safely bring it down:
Check Your Media Files
Navigate to the ~/scormcontent/assets folder in your exported package. This folder contains all the images, videos, and audio actually used in your course.
Identify the largest files here and consider optimizing them.
Compress Images and Documents
Reduce image resolution where possible without affecting readability.
Compress PDFs or other large documents using tools like Adobe Acrobat or online compressors.
Optimize Videos
If possible, host videos externally on Vimeo or YouTube and embed them using the Embed block. This removes the video from the SCORM package entirely.
If hosting externally isn’t an option, compress videos using tools like VEED’s Video Compressor or Handbrake.
Split Large Courses
If your course is still too large after optimization, consider splitting it into multiple SCORM packages (e.g., separate modules or lessons) and linking them within your LMS.
Note: Only media that’s actually inserted into blocks is included in the export. Unused files in your Compozer Library do not get packaged. This is just a heads-up in case anyone thinks otherwise.
We found that with Wistia you get cleaner playback, no ads, no suggested videos and much stronger analytics. Just gives you far more control and also allows you to change the color of the controls.
